Holly White looks back at an epic Epsom and the how the Derby upfolded. The Epsom Derby certainly came with a few surprises on Saturday, and one of them was Lambourn taking the win with ease.
Bookies favoured Delacroix to make an impact on the big stage, but Ryan Moore’s 9th place finish was way off the mark.
And William Buick too was absent in the race, after Charlie Appleby deemed the ground softer than ideal for the 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court.
Lambourn’s win though extends Aidan O’Brien’s Classic wins to a record breaking 11, and it was a convincing one to say the least.
Wayne Lordan led him to the front early on, and was able to keep the stamina and win; three and a three quarter lengths in front of the second placed Lazy Griff.
The win is a first for 43 year-old Lordan, who has ridden nine times in the Derby over his career.
And O’Brien was ecstatic for the experienced jockey, saying: “Wayne gave him an incredible ride.
“I’m delighted for Wayne, he’s a great fellow, he does so much hard work.
“Everyone knew what he was going to do, he’s very straightforward, Wayne knew he’d stay so he went forward.
“He’s a very fit, genuine horse.
“He’s a typical Australia so it’s incredible and I’m delighted for Wayne.”
