Fashion expert Katie Gibson returns with her latest edition of 'The Spectator' as she looks ahead to the remainder of July as well as the prestigious Glorious Goodwood. She talks fashion, food and your guide to a fabulous race day. July brings with it a number of notable sporting occasions. Your TV screens, newspapers and social media channels have, no doubt, been awash with scenes from Henley, the Grand Prix, Wimbledon and even a bit of cricket. YAWN. However, starting from July 29th, the racing gods are about to deliver us five days of proper sporting action in the form of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. Now that's what I call ‘glorious’.
Fashion:
Dressing for racing in the summer is all about elegance and paying tribute to timeless classic styles. There is, however, also an element of carefree summer spirit in the air which makes things a little more fun. However, it should be noted that, at this particular track there are a number of dress codes depending on which enclosure you have tickets for. We would always encourage spectators to rise to the occasion anyway!
Ladies:
This is OUR moment. Honestly, this meeting is all about female power thanks to the all women race, the Magnolia cup, taking place on Ladies day. It’s a time to shine, and thanks to the summer sun, you don’t even need to hide your gorgeous dresses under coats. There are two broad categories of style that we would recommend: a whimsical, floaty dress or a bold structured number. If you are someone who finds yourself in the first category, then you are in luck because the brands are currently bursting with flowing maxi dresses. Look for one in a soft yet bright pattern to celebrate the spirit of summer. ‘Aspiga’ or ‘Pink City London 'are tried and trusted brands for quality dresses with flattering details. For example we love a ruched bodice with a square neckline and frilly straps. If you are on a budget, then we hear Zara is the place to head to on the high street. For those of you who are less ‘floaty-fairy’ and more ‘strong silhouette’, then take inspiration from Free People’s ‘Hutch The Ridge Dress’ which combines a tailored top half with a gathered skirt. Alternatively, ‘Ghost’ has a charming little crepe slip dress in Polka dots - very in this season! Summer is also the perfect time to have a bit more fun with your accessories, less of a necessity against the weather, more of a frivolity. So embrace that energy and be a little bit playful. We’re thinking perhaps a boater, espadrille sandals or a slightly impractical yet gorgeous bag.
Mens:
If done well, there is nothing more chic than when a man wears a summer suit. Soft, neutral shades in linen paired with a crisp light blue or white shirt. Divine. ‘House of Bruar 'is a good place to try if you’re in need of such an outfit, although this look is so timeless that you might be able to borrow one from a relative. However, if you are really feeling like pushing the boat out and wanting something a little more unique then look no further than ‘Dashing Tweed’. ‘Fusing heritage and technology’, they offer a made to measure service where you pick your own tweed and craft it into whatever garment you desire. They also have a number of items you can shop now, including their Vita Overshirt, which would add a more modern touch to proceedings - providing you are in a relaxed enclosure. Finally, if you are anything like the men in the Spectator’s life, then you may well forget to apply sun cream. Voila, a panama hat, the epitome of summertime elegance. Suggesting they are, in fact, the ‘spiritual home’ of the Panama, Goodwood sell their own complete with their signature yellow trim. Topping off the look requires two things around your neck: a decent tie and a set of binos. Oh, and a glass of cold champagne in your hand - after all, one must keep hydrated in the heat.
