Bellewstown
The Course
Left-handed, sharp and undulating, Bellewstown is a compact track of around nine furlongs with a prolonged uphill finish extending for approximately three furlongs. Despite its sharp appearance, the hurdle course provides a relatively fair test, with long straights giving horses sufficient opportunity to find their rhythm and make up ground.
The bends are fairly tight, particularly the turn away from the stands, although good cambering means they do not ride quite as sharply as might be expected. Races are often run at a decent gallop, allowing patiently ridden horses an opportunity to challenge in the lengthy home straight rather than making prominent positioning essential.
There are five hurdles to a circuit, with no steeplechases staged at the course. Bellewstown traditionally races during the summer and the ground is often on the quicker side, although watering helps maintain suitable conditions. Overall, the course rewards nimble horses with tactical speed while its sustained uphill finish ensures sufficient stamina is also required.
