Carlisle

The Course

Right-handed, undulating and galloping, Carlisle is a stiff track where the long uphill home straight places a real emphasis on stamina. Races can often be steadily run as riders look to conserve energy for the demanding finish, while those racing prominently at the bottom of the hill, particularly over fences, can prove difficult to catch.

The fences are generally among the least demanding in the country, with Carlisle regularly recording a low rate of non-completions. There are, however, a couple of obstacles that require particular respect. The first fence in the home straight comes after runners sweep downhill off a bend, while the first in the back straight presents a similar challenge. Both can test inexperienced jumpers despite being fundamentally fair.

Ground conditions frequently become extremely testing during mid-winter, adding considerably to the stamina demands.

Ideally, horses need to travel comfortably, jump accurately and retain enough energy for the climb to the line.
