Catterick

The Course

Catterick is a sharp, left-handed track with minor undulations, where speed and tactical position are often more important than stamina. The fences are considered relatively straightforward, although the strong tempo of chases can make it a more demanding jumping test than it first appears, particularly for novices.

Front-runners and prominent racers are favoured, as horses that become outpaced or come off the bridle can struggle to regain their position. Nippy, quick-travelling types generally have an advantage over gallopers who need time to build momentum, especially as the ground rarely becomes extremely testing. A horse capable of coming from well off the pace to win here may therefore be worth marking up for a stiffer track.

One quirk to remember for those watching races on television is the deceptive camera angle entering the home straight: horses racing towards the centre of the course can appear closer to the leaders than they really are.
