Doncaster

The Course

Left-handed, essentially flat and galloping, Doncaster is a spacious track that generally places an emphasis on speed and the ability to travel strongly. Excellent drainage means conditions are often less testing than at other jumps courses during midwinter, with quicker ground particularly suiting horses that can move comfortably through their races.

Chases are frequently run at a strong pace, making it important to hold a good position without using unnecessary energy.

Horses that come under pressure entering the back straight can quickly lose touch, especially on faster ground, although greater patience is possible when there is some ease underfoot. Hurdle races tend to develop differently, with the tempo often increasing only on the approach to the third-last.

The fences can provide a meaningful test for inexperienced chasers, with several obstacles, including the final open ditch, demanding accurate jumping. Overall, Doncaster rewards fluent travellers with enough speed to maintain their position and jump efficiently at pace.
