Down Royal

The Course

Right-handed, galloping and gently undulating, Down Royal is a spacious, almost square-shaped circuit measuring close to two miles. There is a downhill approach towards the straight followed by a slight rise to the winning post, but overall it provides a notably fair examination where horses can succeed from a variety of positions.

The chase course sits on the wide outside and features ten fences to a circuit. Four obstacles come within the final four furlongs, followed by a short run-in, placing an emphasis on fluent jumping as races reach their decisive stages. The fences themselves are generally fair and allow accomplished jumpers to establish a smooth rhythm.

Riders sometimes head wide in search of better ground, particularly when conditions have deteriorated. Unlike many sharper Irish courses, Down Royal offers ample opportunity for horses to find their stride and gradually improve their position. Overall, it particularly suits galloping horses that travel comfortably, jump efficiently and possess enough stamina to sustain their effort through the finish.
