Downpatrick

The Course

Right-handed, narrow and heavily undulating, Downpatrick is one of Ireland’s most distinctive jumps tracks. Its compact circuit features numerous turns, climbs and descents, making it unsuitable for many long-striding gallopers. The dramatic downhill section after passing the winning post is particularly unusual, while the final furlong and a half provides a demanding uphill finish.

Positioning is important and handy horses are generally favoured, although competition for prominent positions can occasionally produce an overly strong early gallop. Riders must conserve their mount’s energy carefully through the repeated changes in elevation, as those racing too aggressively can struggle badly on the final climb.

There are six fences to a circuit, with the final two positioned close together before the uphill home straight. The fences have traditionally been regarded as relatively straightforward, although the unconventional layout can make jumping at angles challenging. Overall, Downpatrick is a genuine specialist’s course, rewarding nimble, balanced horses that handle its turns and undulations while retaining sufficient stamina for the stiff finish.
