Exeter

The Course

Right-handed, hilly and galloping, Exeter is a demanding track with a two-mile circuit laid out in a long oval. There are eleven fences to a circuit and a relatively short run-in of around 170 yards. Its defining feature is the half-mile home straight, which rises continuously towards the finish and places a considerable emphasis on stamina.

Ground conditions can significantly alter the character of the course. Midwinter going can become extremely testing, while prolonged dry spells can produce much quicker conditions.

When the ground is soft, the uphill finish can lead to particularly gruelling finishes as tiring horses tackle the final climb.

The fences are generally fair and Exeter is regarded as an excellent track for novice chasers, while still providing a thorough examination of jumping ability. Horses need to travel and jump efficiently around this expansive course before conserving enough energy for the stiff finish. Overall, Exeter provides a fair but searching test of stamina, jumping and balance.
