Fontwell
The Course
Left-handed and sharp, Fontwell is one of Britain’s most distinctive jumps tracks. The chase course is configured as a figure of eight, while the hurdles course is a more conventional oval. Its unusual layout can favour course specialists and agile horses that handle tight turns particularly well.
The fences are generally straightforward, although slick, economical jumping can provide a significant advantage, especially among novices. Those able to maintain momentum over the obstacles can quickly establish an advantage over slower jumpers. Despite its sharp nature, Fontwell has a stiff finish, particularly on heavy ground, when races can begin to develop from some way out and stamina becomes increasingly important.
On the hurdles course, racing wide can prove advantageous in testing conditions. The paddock exit halfway along the run-in can also distract horses and occasionally cause them to idle. Overall, Fontwell rewards nimble, fluent jumpers that handle its unique configuration and retain enough stamina for the demanding finish.
