Hexham

The Course

Left-handed and undulating, Hexham is a fair but demanding track whose defining feature is the steep climb from the end of the back straight all the way to the finish. The uphill section places considerable emphasis on stamina, particularly when conditions become testing, and can dramatically change the complexion of a race.

Hurdle contests are generally steadily run, but horses committed too early can be vulnerable. Those that appear to be travelling comfortably with a clear lead can quickly tire once they encounter the stiff final climb, making patience and conserving energy important. The course’s undulations also require horses to maintain their balance and rhythm throughout.

The fences are generally considered straightforward and provide a fair jumping test, with relatively few fallers, although unseats are more common. Ground conditions play a significant role in how Hexham rides. Overall, it favours balanced, stamina-laden horses that travel efficiently and retain enough energy for the long, demanding climb to the line.
