Killarney

The Course

Left-handed, undulating and relatively sharp, Killarney is an oval circuit measuring around nine and a half furlongs. The bends can be tight, particularly the turn after the winning post, but relatively long straights balance the course’s sharper characteristics and give horses sufficient opportunity to find their rhythm.

There is no overwhelming positional advantage, with horses able to succeed from different parts of the field provided they travel comfortably and negotiate the turns efficiently. Ground conditions can have a significant influence, however, with the surface capable of becoming very soft relatively quickly after rain and providing a much more demanding test.

There are six fences to a circuit of the chase course, with three situated along the dog-legged home straight of under three furlongs. The obstacles are generally fair and inviting, allowing fluent jumpers to maintain momentum. Overall, Killarney provides a balanced examination, rewarding agile horses capable of handling its bends and undulations while possessing enough speed to remain competitive around its relatively sharp configuration.
