Ludlow

The Course

Right-handed, sharp and oval, Ludlow is a speedy track that generally favours horses with tactical pace and efficient jumping. The chase circuit is largely flat, measures around a mile and a half and features nine fences, followed by a run-in of approximately 250 yards. Riders must also steer left after the final fence to remain on the correct course.

The fences are generally considered straightforward, although strongly run races can contribute to a higher number of casualties than might be expected. The first fence in the home straight was once particularly troublesome, but has proved less problematic since being repositioned. Fast, economical jumpers can gain a valuable advantage, especially over shorter distances where speed often takes precedence over stamina.

The hurdles course runs outside the chase track and features easier turns and some minor undulations. Overall, Ludlow rewards speedy, agile horses that travel strongly and jump efficiently, with long-striding types generally coping well despite the course’s sharp character.
