Market Rasen

The Course

Right-handed and relatively sharp, Market Rasen is a mostly flat track with only minor undulations. Its configuration generally favours nippy, athletic horses that travel comfortably through their races, although testing ground can increase the emphasis on stamina.

Track position and tactical speed are particularly important, as Market Rasen can be a difficult place to make up significant ground. Races are often decided on the approach to the first obstacle in the home straight, where horses able to quicken strongly can establish a decisive advantage. However, committing too early also carries risks, as the home straight is deceptively long and can expose horses that have used too much energy.

The fences are generally straightforward, with the downhill third-last proving less troublesome than in the past. Overall, Market Rasen rewards fluent travellers with enough speed to hold a good position, while successful riders must judge their challenge carefully to conserve sufficient energy for the lengthy run to the finish.
