Musselburgh

The Course

Right-handed, almost flat and relatively sharp, Musselburgh is a compact oval circuit measuring just over a mile and a quarter. Its tight bends generally favour handy, agile horses rather than long-striding gallopers, while the course’s excellent drainage means conditions are often quicker than at many jumps tracks during midwinter.

Prominent racers can enjoy a significant advantage, particularly on faster ground. The final four furlongs ride quickly and horses held up towards the rear can find it difficult to make ground once the pace increases. Softer conditions allow riders to be more patient, although maintaining a good position remains important.

There are eight fences to a circuit, four in each straight.

Although the obstacles are not considered particularly stiff, they can claim more casualties than their appearance suggests.

Overall, Musselburgh rewards nimble horses that travel strongly, hold a prominent position and jump efficiently, with speed generally more important than stamina when conditions are favourable.
