Newcastle

The Course

Left-handed and galloping, Newcastle is a fair but demanding track with a steady uphill rise stretching from the home turn to the winning line. Its long, open straight places an emphasis on stamina, although races are often steadily run, particularly over hurdles, meaning the true test frequently begins only as runners turn for home.

The fences provide a significant examination of jumping ability and, while fundamentally fair, Newcastle ranks among the stiffer chase courses in the country. Horses that jump fluently and conserve energy through the early stages are therefore well suited to the track.

Positioning can also prove important, especially in hurdle races, where experienced riders often favour the stand-side rail in the home straight. Despite its galloping nature, patiently run races can place less emphasis on stamina than expected. Overall, Newcastle rewards strong travellers that jump accurately and possess enough stamina to sustain their effort throughout the lengthy uphill run to the finish.
