Newton Abbot

The Course

Left-handed and tight, Newton Abbot is a sharp track that places considerable emphasis on speed, agility and the ability to travel comfortably. With runners seemingly always on the turn, handy types are particularly well suited to the course and prominently ridden horses often enjoy a significant advantage. Maintaining momentum is crucial, as horses that come off the bridle early can quickly find themselves struggling to hold their position. The sharp nature of the circuit means even horses with stamina limitations can be effective, while speedy ex-Flat performers often adapt particularly well. The fences arrive relatively quickly but generally pose few problems, with Newton Abbot statistically among the easiest courses in Britain to complete over fences.

The hurdles course is similarly fast and features a very short run-in, meaning leaders are rarely caught after clearing the final flight. Overall, Newton Abbot rewards fluent travellers and efficient jumpers that can race handily and maintain their speed around its tight configuration.
