Perth
The Course
Right-handed and largely flat, Perth is a compact circuit of around a mile and a quarter, featuring eight fences and generally sweeping turns, although the bend into the home straight is considerably sharper. Despite appearing relatively straightforward, the course can provide a more demanding stamina test than its configuration might suggest.
Races often begin to develop from some way out, and riders can be tempted to commit too early on the flat racing surface. The home straight is deceptively long, making it important to conserve enough energy for the finish. The first fence in the straight can also test horses that are already beginning to come under pressure.
The water jump sits in front of the stands and is bypassed on the run-in, leaving a lengthy stretch from the final fence to the winning post. Testing spring ground can further increase the emphasis on stamina. Overall, Perth rewards horses that travel efficiently and whose riders judge the pace carefully.
