Plumpton
The Course
Left-handed, tight and undulating, Plumpton is a sharp track that generally favours handy, agile horses capable of negotiating its turns while maintaining a good position. Over hurdles, races often begin to develop relatively early on the final circuit, with the complexion capable of changing quickly as the pace increases.
Fluent jumping can be a significant advantage over fences. The obstacle at the top of the hill can catch out inexperienced horses, while another at the bottom provides an opportunity for accurate jumpers to gain valuable ground. The first fence in the back straight can also prove tricky due to its downhill approach. Although the chase course records a relatively high casualty rate, this may reflect the standard of runners rather than particularly stiff fences.
Ground conditions also influence tactics. On testing going, better ground can often be found away from the inside on the hurdles course. Overall, Plumpton rewards nimble, efficient jumpers that travel strongly around its distinctive undulations.
