Sligo

The Course

Right-handed, sharp and notably undulating, Sligo is a compact circuit of just over a mile where horses are almost constantly turning. Its configuration places considerable emphasis on speed, balance and tactical positioning, with a good position approaching the home straight often crucial.

The chase course runs outside the hurdles track and features five fences to a circuit. One comes immediately before the straight and another near the bottom of the slightly uphill run-in, ensuring accurate jumping remains important as races reach their decisive stages. Prominent racers are generally favoured, particularly when conditions become testing and making ground from behind can prove extremely difficult.

The going can vary considerably and heavy ground becomes unusually holding, with some horses struggling badly to handle the surface. Despite its sharp nature, the rising finish ensures stamina cannot be ignored. Overall, Sligo frequently produces course specialists, typically agile horses with tactical pace that race handily, cope with the undulations and retain enough stamina for the testing finish.
