Stratford

The Course

Left-handed and sharp, Stratford is a speed-orientated track where tactical pace and fast, accurate jumping are significant assets. Races are frequently well run, making it difficult for horses that lose their position to recover, while the sweeping bend into the relatively short home straight can further favour those racing handily.

The fences are sizeable and, although not especially difficult individually, they can catch horses out when approached at speed. This combination of strong pace and substantial obstacles contributes to a relatively high number of falls and unseats. A water jump sits near the winning post but is bypassed on the final circuit.

Hurdle races also tend to be strongly run, with jockeys often committing for home earlier than they might elsewhere because of the short straight. Speedy ex-Flat horses can therefore be particularly effective. Overall, Stratford rewards experienced, agile horses that travel strongly, maintain a prominent position and waste little time over their obstacles.
