Taunton

The Course

Right-handed and sharp, Taunton is a relatively speedy track where tactical positioning and the ability to travel strongly are important. Races can begin to develop from a long way out, meaning horses caught too far off the pace may find themselves under pressure earlier than expected.

The fences have traditionally been regarded as small and straightforward, although the chase course records a surprisingly high casualty rate. The sharp nature of the track and the generally lower standard of horses competing are likely contributing factors. The downhill approach to the third-last fence can be particularly tricky, especially for novices, while hurdlers face a similar challenge approaching the second-last flight.

Ground conditions are often favourable compared with other British courses during winter, helped by the course’s watering facilities. Overall, Taunton rewards sharp, efficient horses that travel comfortably and jump accurately at speed, with novices needing to cope particularly well when the tempo increases late in a race.
