Tipperary
The Course
Left-handed, flat and relatively galloping, Tipperary is a compact oval track where speed and tactical positioning are important. Despite its galloping appearance, the chase course can ride particularly quickly and horses racing prominently often enjoy an advantage, as those in front can be difficult to peg back along the level home straight.
The chase course is positioned inside the hurdles track and features six fences to a circuit, with two situated in the home straight of around two and a half furlongs. The obstacles are generally fair and allow fluent jumpers to maintain their momentum, making it important for horses to travel comfortably and hold a competitive position before the race begins to develop.
Ground conditions can dramatically alter the nature of the test. Following significant rain, the surface can become particularly testing and difficult for some horses to handle, increasing the emphasis on stamina considerably. Overall, Tipperary rewards speedy, efficient jumpers on normal ground, while proven stamina and an ability to cope with holding conditions become important when the weather deteriorates.
