Wetherby
The Course
Left-handed and galloping, Wetherby is a fair, relatively quick track that particularly suits free-running, long-striding horses. Maintaining a handy position is often important, as those racing prominently can prove difficult to catch if allowed to dictate, although conserving enough energy for a finishing effort remains crucial.
There are nine fences to a circuit, with four situated in the home straight. Following changes associated with the nearby A1 redevelopment, these were moved to the inside of the hurdles track. The fences are generally fair and less demanding than they were historically, making Wetherby a suitable venue for novices, although inaccurate jumping can still prove costly.
Fluent jumpers that travel strongly are particularly well suited to the course, as losing momentum can leave horses struggling to regain their position. Overall, Wetherby provides a fair test that rewards efficient jumping, tactical speed and the ability to maintain a strong gallop throughout.
