Wexford

The Course

Left-handed, sharp and undulating, Wexford is a compact rectangular track of under nine furlongs. Having previously raced right-handed, the course was reconfigured to operate in the opposite direction, creating a slightly uphill home straight and a layout generally regarded as kinder and fairer than its predecessor.

Tight turns and numerous undulations still make tactical speed and balance important, particularly on the hurdles course, which runs inside the chase track. Handy horses are generally well suited to the configuration, although improvements to the bends, drainage and racing surface have helped produce a more forgiving examination than historically.

There are six fences to a circuit of the chase course, with only one situated in the finishing straight. The obstacles are fundamentally fair, allowing accurate jumpers to establish a rhythm. Ground conditions can vary considerably around different sections of the course due to its undulating terrain. Overall, Wexford rewards speedy, agile horses that handle tight turns comfortably while retaining sufficient stamina for the rising finish.
