Wincanton

The Course

Right-handed, flat and sharp, Wincanton is a fast track where speed, tactical positioning and the ability to travel strongly are particularly important. On good or quicker ground it ranks among the sharpest jumps courses in Britain, with hold-up horses often disadvantaged and prominent racers difficult to catch.

From the home turn, runners travel largely downhill towards the finish, making it crucial not to allow rivals to establish a decisive advantage. The three fences in the home straight arrive in quick succession, further favouring those already in a good position. The fences themselves are stiff and provide a demanding jumping test, contributing to a relatively high casualty rate.

Testing ground transforms the course, with strongly run races becoming severe examinations of stamina and fields often finishing widely strung out, particularly over hurdles. Overall, Wincanton rewards fast, fluent jumpers that race handily, while stamina becomes increasingly important when conditions deteriorate.
