Ghost Story stayed on strongly to win over course and distance last summer, her sole career success to date, and although she failed to build on that thereafter, all runs came either on the AW or in very testing conditions and over trips in excess of what she encounters today. Fresh could be the best time to catch her and this race looks to be lacking any real depth so hopefully a return to this track and trip can pay dividends today.

Dawn Of Liberation beat a subsequent winner when successful at Beverley almost two weeks ago and Kaiya Fraser’s 3lbs claim almost offsets the rise so Ruth Carr’s runner looks the biggest danger.

Paul Midgley has trained the winner of this race three times in the last four years and runs two – last years’ winner Herakles and Rock Of England. The former returns in a bid to defend his crown racing off 57, some 9lbs below last year, yet despite being attractively weighted is yet to show much in four runs so far this season so preference is for Rock Of England who has also dropped down the weights, from his last win off 82 to his new mark of 67, and looked more likely to be coming to the boil when fourth at Carlisle when last seen.
