GLORIOUS GOODWOOD - DAY 2 (WEDNESDAY)

After bagging a few winners on the opening day the team return to tackle Wednesday's action from this illustrious festival. 13:50 GOODWOOD

Several of the highest-rated entries have defected to Thursday's Gordon Stakes, but this still looks an intriguing contest featuring a number of promising and unexposed three-year-olds.

Cannes was a well-backed favourite at Royal Ascot but never featured after being marooned in a high draw. Joseph O'Brien's colt is entitled to another chance, while Infraad and Hateen head the market alongside him.

With this unlikely to develop into a searching stamina test, the race could favour those ridden prominently. Bay Royale fits that mould, having made all to comfortably account for both Infraad and Hateen in a maiden back in April. He meets those rivals on identical terms once again and, with similar scope for improvement, looks overpriced.

The two Wathnan Racing representatives are likely to dominate the betting. Wild Blossom is James Doyle's choice after making an impressive winning debut, although she failed to build on that effort at Royal Ascot and now bids to bounce back.

Hidden Gift took a sizeable step forward when finishing fifth at the Royal Meeting and the drop back in trip looks certain to suit.

Zigazig Ah just got the job done in the ultra-competitive Super Sprint last time, a piece of form that arguably sets the standard in this field. She looks a solid each-way proposition.

Don't discount Princess D'Orange either. Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle and she's more than capable if rediscovering her earlier form.

Flora Of Bermuda is likely to prove a warm favourite on her first attempt over seven furlongs. She's bred to appreciate the extra distance and has often shaped as though a stiffer test would suit. Already proven at a higher level, she sets the standard and will take plenty of beating.

Planet Seeker looked particularly well handicapped when scoring last time out and now deserves the opportunity to step up in class. She already has course form to her name and, with Jamie Spencer booked, could be delivered late to claim a place.

Rulers Pride is James Doyle's mount and is likely to attract plenty of support despite needing to put a below-par effort at Royal Ascot firmly behind him.

Adonius arrives unbeaten after three starts and has consistently shown plenty of early speed from the stalls. Those front-running tactics could prove a major asset around Goodwood and he may take plenty of catching.

Flight Signal created a huge impression when winning on debut before failing to fire at Royal Ascot. However, that form has received a boost, with the Bath runner-up subsequently running with credit at Royal Ascot before going on to win a maiden. At generous odds, Flight Signal looks capable of bouncing back.

Another vintage renewal of the Sussex Stakes sees several top-class milers locking horns.

The race is headed by Bow Echo, winner of both the 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes, and Gstaad, who finished runner-up in both contests. Throw Queen Anne Stakes hero Ten Bob Tony and the progressive Opera Ballo into the mix and this develops into a fascinating championship event.

The race appears to revolve around the front two in the betting and, if Ryan Moore can deliver Gstaad a little earlier than he managed at Ascot, he may well be able to reverse the placings with Bow Echo.

At a bigger price, Opera Ballo looks well suited by Goodwood's course and distance and has solid place claims under William Buick.

Although lacking the prestige of some of the week's feature races, this looks one of the most competitive handicaps of the entire meeting, with strong claims held by a significant proportion of the 28-runner field.

Towards the head of the market, Sir Garfield, Supreme King and Under The Twilight all make obvious appeal, and it would be difficult to discourage support for any of them. Of that trio, Under The Twilight makes the most appeal. A last-time-out winner, he also boasts solid course-and-distance form, having finished second here while carrying more weight than he does today.

Looking further down the betting, Silver Wraith catches the eye. The grey filly returns to her last winning mark and has enough Goodwood form to suggest she can run a big race.

Another grey worth considering is Wreck It Ryley, who shaped with promise in a strong York handicap last time. Further improvement is required, but he looks attractively priced.

Completing the shortlist is Tex, another last-time-out winner who represents a yard in excellent form. He's progressing with racing and looks capable of improving again.

Honourable mentions also go to handicap debutant Lunar Melody, whose connections are particularly interesting despite the stable's recent form, while Mythical Composer could outrun his odds if able to transfer his all-weather form back onto turf.

Bobby Bennu is a tough, battle-hardened handicapper who showed he retains plenty of ability when narrowly denied at Newcastle last time. He travelled strongly throughout and stuck to his task well, only to be caught close home.

The concern is that he has developed a habit of finding one too good. He hasn't won on turf since 2024 and his tendency to break slowly could prove costly around Goodwood's turning track.

Preference instead is for Crimson Spirit, who is at his best on fast ground and arrives with proven course-and-distance form. Ryan Moore takes the ride and, although he finished behind the reopposing Colombier at Epsom in early June, he's better off at the weights this time. His latest runner-up effort at Newmarket suggests another success may not be far away.
