RACE DAY INTERNATIONAL: THE TRAVERS STAKES

The Travers Stakes takes centre stage at Saratoga, with a high-quality field assembled for one of the most prestigious prizes of the American summer. Pundit Toby Darby assesses the Group 1 contest and pinpoints his best bet. 23:35 SARATOGA

My main pick is Leading Change, who arrives unbeaten after two starts for trainer Brad Cox. He took the Indiana Derby last time out and showed enough tactical speed and professionalism to suggest he can make his presence felt at the highest level. Drawn in stall 2, Leading Change should have plenty of options and, with a good pace expected, could get the ideal stalking trip before making his challenge turning for home. The obvious question is whether he has enough experience for such a major step up in class, but at a double-figure price, I’m happy to take the chance that he can improve again. Golden Tempo is the obvious danger after victories in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, while he has already proven his stamina over this sort of trip. Renegade, who comes here fresh from his Jim Dandy success, also demands plenty of respect. LEADING CHANGE (E/W) written by Toby Darby
