Alan Morris takes a look back at the Christmas week and pinpoints two recent runners who could provide even more festive cheer in the weeks and months to come.

GNOMON (T LAWES)

Following a NH flat winning debut for Ralph Beckett Gnomon had a promising flat season as he stepped up in trip, ending with a 1m 6f Haydock handicap victory. After a transfer to the Wates / Lawes combo he has had two quick promising seconds in novice hurdles over two sharp 2m tracks but never seriously troubled the winners. This should give enough handicapping scope when upped in trip, as his flat form suggests. The 4yo gelding still appeared to have plenty of scope to improve on the flat but it remains to be seen whether a jumping campaign will cast a shadow on that potential or whether he will become a dual-purpose horse.

JAITROPLACLASSE (R LLEWELLYN)

The €110,000 Euro purchase didn’t show much in four runs for Nicky Henderson and transferred to Robbie Llewellyn for £7000 and has been finding his form over fences, making the breakthrough in September. After a late fall when still challenging in his next  race he disappointed at Wincanton. He was reunited with Charlie Price this week, making the long journey to Sedgefield and was backed from an early price of 16-1 into 11-4. After hitting a flat spot he ran on well into 3rd place around the speed-favouring unique track. A greater test over 2m or a step in trip should see him progress again.
