THE SPECTATOR - EASTER P2P SPECIAL

Katie Gibson provides her perfect guide to what to wear, what to eat, and where to go if you're heading to a Point to Point this Easter weekend. Read her perfect guide below. Nothing says Easter bank holiday quite like a point to point. Once all Easter eggs are demolished and you’ve emerged from a chocolate coma, then what better fun than to head down to your local course. It’s the sort of event where everyone is welcome: children, dogs, old school chums, pony club rivals, and most likely one of the stars of Clarkson’s Farm. The Spectator even spotted one of the Spice Girls knee-deep in the mud at one renowned Dorset course. Packing the car already? Be sure to read below for suggestions on how to truly maximise your day.

Getting dressed:

Unlike a day at the races, you’ll be out in the elements with little opportunity for shelter. Whilst it is great fun to be right in the heart of the action, the British springtime weather often delivers brilliant sunshine to heavy downpours - sometimes all within the same hour! Make the most of having a car close by and pack a variety of clothing items: a waxed jacket, wellies, and a hat should do the trick. Having said that, Spring has well and truly sprung in the British countryside. Lambs are frolicking, flowers are blooming, and the smell of the first BBQs are lingering in the air. Don’t let the side down and turn up in boring shades of clothing. Instead, opt for soft and pastel shades, for example, greens, yellows and pinks. From Fern’s range of waistcoats, add a dab of spring colour to your outfits - with styles for both the lads and the Ladies. The Spectator’s accessory of choice: a dog - even better if it’s sporting a rosette from the event’s dog show. Although, we won’t judge if your hound is more likely to be a prize-winning sausage roll thief.

Getting there:

Gone are the days when you paid by the car rather than per person. However, it’s still good fun to bundle into one car and much more sensible if your car is the sort that could end up getting stuck in a muddy field. Ideally, you’ll travel in a 4 x 4 so that you can picnic from the boot and sit up on the bonnet to watch the action. In terms of the boot, the bigger, the better! Point to pointing requires a lot of paraphernalia: an umbrella, suncream, picnic rugs, chairs and binos (bonus points if adorned with badges). However, the jewel in the boot must be the picnic itself…

Getting fed:

It is almost a competitive sport in itself, preparing the ultimate picnic. The more homely the better, but there must be an adequate amount, after all you never know who might pop over to the car for a nibble. Sausage rolls, cocktail sausages, egg sandwiches, hot cross buns, lemon sponge, Easter eggs all served in a delightful array of colourful and battered tins. Champagne (if good quality) can be fun on a sunny day but equally a flask of tea is just as glamorous. Ideally, this should come out of a wicker picnic basket rather than some natty old cool bag. Think F&M rather than B&M. Getting going:

Keen? Kimblewick, North Cotswold, Old Berks and Taunton Vale Foxhounds are just a handful of Point to Points taking place during the Easter Weekend.  Find a full list of fixtures here: https://www.pointtopoint.co.uk/fixtures
