After two horses from the Hotlist won last week Alan Morris returns to pinpoint two recent runners you should be paying close attention to.

MAUNDY THURSDAY (T DASCOMBE)

Unraced at 2, Maundy Thursday showed glimmers of ability in three quick runs earlier this year and ran more promisingly on handicap debut against older horses over 1m3f at Windsor on Monday night. After taking a keen hold under an apprentice he stayed on well from an outside pitch before weakening late on. It wasn’t a strong race but Maundy Thursday showed enough off a mark of 57 to improve further and 10-12f look to be ideal right now.

FIRST ENCOUNTER (J GALLAGHER)

First Encounter had a productive 3yo season with two wins and three seconds but still managed to retain a rating of 47! The gelding’s second run back at Pontefract on Wednesday showed enough to suggest his turn could come around soon, staying on well after racing prominently from a wide draw. He may need a stiff test or soft going over a mile but 10f suits equally well and he has form on most ground conditions as well as winning at Chelmsford.
