PUNCHESTOWN FESTIVAL - DAY 1 (TUESDAY)

It's the opening day of Punchestown's five-day jumps meeting with an abundance of top-grade action to get stuck into. 14:30 PUNCHESTOWN

The market suggests this revolves around two runners, with Fountain Hope and Willitgoahead dominating the betting.

Of the pair, Fountain Hope makes the stronger appeal despite carrying extra weight. He arrives seeking a four-timer and, while this represents a step up in class, the overall depth of the race does not appear particularly strong.

Willitgoahead commands respect given his connections, but his recent record raises concerns having failed to complete in three of his last four starts, leaving him with questions to answer.

Keep On Dreaming, from the Enda Bolger yard, and the consistent Empire Soldier look the most credible threats, but the progressive profile of the selection is hard to ignore.

15:05 PUNCHESTOWN

A maximum field of 25 runners makes this a typically competitive festival handicap where finding value is essential.

English challengers Judicial Deference, Laughing John and Daylatedollarshort all have claims, though their lofty positions in the weights could make life difficult in such a deep contest.

JP McManus has a long-standing reputation for targeting races like this, and Ted Walsh’s Sticwiththeprocess looks a likely candidate to run a big race. Lightly raced this term, he could be fresher than many of his rivals and shaped well when second in a similar contest earlier this month. A repeat of that effort from the same mark would see him firmly involved.

Fairlander, from the foot of the weights, is another who could outrun big odds.

15:40 PUNCHESTOWN

Another competitive handicap hurdle with plenty in with chances. Willie Mullins’ Murcia commands respect, though without a win since Aintree 2024 she makes limited appeal from a value perspective.

Khrisma, representing the British challenge, was once highly regarded but disappointed last time and, like Murcia, may be short enough in the betting.

Jet To Monte Carlo looks more appealing after an easy success at Fairyhouse. Despite a rise in the weights, he remains unexposed and open to further improvement for a shrewd yard.

At a bigger price, Arch Empire could be worth noting. While not the most consistent, he is gradually dropping in the weights and this shorter trip may suit. If extra places are available, he could sneak into the frame.

Frankendael and Larzac are others to keep in mind.

16:15 PUNCHESTOWN

A Grade 1 featuring a mix of runners who either underperformed at Cheltenham or bypassed the Festival, making this a tricky contest to assess.

El Cairos ran with credit in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle but may have felt the effects of that effort, while Sober also has questions to answer following a below-par showing in March.

Blake skipped Cheltenham and could benefit from arriving fresher. He was in contention when falling last time and, with Noel Meade’s expertise, could be involved if the principals fail to deliver.

Le Labo is another who avoided the Festival and may hold a fitness edge, representing a yard that excels in these contests.

In an open race, Blake makes each-way appeal.

16:50 PUNCHESTOWN

Brown Advisory winner Kitzbuhel showcased both class and determination when scoring at Cheltenham and a repeat of that effort would make him difficult to oppose here.

Oscars Brother and Spanish Harlem, both course-and-distance winners, could be in the mix for minor honours, while July Flower’s weight allowance may help her bridge the gap at bigger odds.

However, Kitzbuhel sets a clear standard and looks capable of following up for Willie Mullins.

17:25 PUNCHESTOWN

The first of two bumpers on the card and, with limited form to assess, it presents a tricky puzzle.

Huntin Boots showed promise on debut and could build on that experience, while Altesse Du Luy represents powerful connections and demands respect, as does Abbeyglen from the Martin Brassil yard.

For each-way value, Noble Indulgence appeals. Trained by Noel Meade, who enjoyed bumper success at Cheltenham, his runners in this sphere are always worth noting.

Whispered Verdict is another interesting contender, representing connections adept across both codes, and his French pedigree suggests potential.

Both look capable of making the frame.

18:05 PUNCHESTOWN

Despite being the smallest field on the card, this is arguably the standout race, with Majborough, Il Etait Temps and Marine Nationale clashing again at the top level.

Veteran Energumene rolled back the years with a strong graded success earlier this month, but at 12 years old, this looks a much tougher assignment.

The race appears to centre on the three market leaders. Majborough could bounce back, though he looks the least convincing of the trio.

Il Etait Temps brings strong form but has a question mark over his jumping following a fall at Ascot.

Marine Nationale, last year’s winner, may have had a lighter campaign and could be primed for a return to form. If reproducing his best, he can take this once again.

18:35 PUNCHESTOWN

Not quite as strong as the earlier bumper but still a competitive contest.

Bunker Buster shaped well when second on debut and that form could be boosted depending on subsequent results. With natural improvement, he looks capable of going close or at least making the frame.

Delamotte has strong credentials and represents a leading yard, making him a serious contender, while stablemate Mr Ragstone also warrants attention.

Teofil is another to note, with an eye-catching jockey booking and connections that know how to ready one for success.

Bunker Buster looks a solid each-way play.
