Alan Morris gives his weekly take and picks out two horses who've raced this past week that you need to follow. TERRIES ROYALE (M Appleby)

Terries Royale was well-backed on a belated seasonal debut to win the same Female Amateur Handicap at Ascot he won last year with Serena Brotherton again, but it was a tough ask first time out. The 5yo gelding was sweating on reappearance and struggled to settle, pulling into a lead with another horse who shot clear and took each other on. On soft ground, those efforts took their toll and were looked after and ultimately well-beaten. That market confidence suggests those losses are only lent for the lightly-raced 5yo who only made his debut at 4. Virtually his whole career and excellent consistent form has been over straight miles with occasional shows of temperament and hanging, but it’s possible 7f could suit out in front as well. Having won on soft twice, the Autumn and an all-weather campaign should provide some belated success.

FORTY YEARS ON (G Scott)

After Forty Years On broke her maiden status in a novice on 2nd run in March there were suggestions the 3yo filly would run in a French Guineas trial, and that shows how they viewed her potential. After another novice win in July, she reappeared last week off only 82, travelling easily and winning smoothly at Ascot despite only a half-length margin. The Handicapper won’t be too fooled but can’t go wild, and there should be a good Autumn handicap on the horizon. Hopefully, the decision to go down the handicap route will continue, and she can aim for black type if kept in training next season, but she shouldn’t be underestimated if put in Listed, Group 3 company earlier than that. She should improve for the return to a mile, but a fast-run 7f is fine, and she has winning form on good and soft. CURRENT HOTLIST:
